What is a Bridge?
A dental bridge is a restoration designed to 'bridge' the gap left when teeth are missing in your mouth.
Typically made up of one or more artificial teeth, the bridge is attached to the teeth on either side of the empty space to fill it.
Bridges can also help prevent other teeth from shifting, which will protect your smile from more serious dental issues such as misalignment or gum disease.
The Bridge Procedure
The bridge procedure typically requires two dental appointments. At your first visit, your dentist will take impressions of your remaining teeth and have that sent to a lab where the bridge will be custom-made to fit your mouth.
Once it's been created, your dentist will place the bridge by permanently cementing it to either your existing natural teeth, dental implants or crowns that have been placed for this purpose.
Why Dental Bridges May Be Used
Bridges can help restore the fit between your upper and lower jaw, helping you continue to chew and speak properly. This can help distribute the force of your bite evenly across your teeth, preventing excessive wear.
Bridges can also make it easier to clean your teeth and maintain good oral hygiene, reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
