What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. This hinge allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat.
TMJ disorder occurs when there are issues with that hinge and the muscles in your face. Common symptoms of TMJ disorder are jaw pain, headaches and ringing in the ears. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic pain, bone loss, gum tissue changes and loose teeth.
Often, TMJ disorder is caused by misaligned teeth or a misaligned jaw, but there are other factors that can cause it such as skull shape, genetics, airway issues and injury or trauma to the jaw.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
If you suspect you are suffering from TMJ disorder, give us a call. Our team can test for, diagnose and create a treatment plan.
Treatment may include wearing a night guard while you sleep to prevent clenching and grinding.
Your dentist may also recommend relaxation techniques, physical therapy, or a TENS machine (an electrical stimulus device) to encourage the face and jaw muscles to relax.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment may be required to correct underlying misalignment issues. Our dentists will work with you to create a treatment plan based on your specific needs.
